Enhancing the Security of your Vehicles: New Standards for Vehicle Cyber Security Defense

The session will focus on showcasing a portable vehicle cybersecurity test-bed system to demonstrate hands on experiments. Then, specific mitigation recommendations are provided for the demonstrated exploits.  New cyber security standards will be overviewed including technical standards SAE J3101 (vehicle hardware security requirements), SAE J3138 (vehicle data link security) and SAE J1939-91A (vehicle network security), as well as insights into SAE/ISO 21434 vehicle cybersecurity processes.  And we will conclude with a discussion of ongoing research on AI enhancements for vehicle defenses.

Professor, University of Detroit 

Mark Zachos is a leader, an entrepreneur, engineer, innovator, educator and a well-known expert in vehicle communications, diagnostics, and cyber-security.

Professor Zachos is the Director of the University of Detroit Vehicle Cyber Engineering (VCE) Laboratory and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on vehicle cyber security. Under Zachos’ direction, the VCE Lab has develop the Truck-in-a-Box Cybersecurity training aid - a portable Vehicle simulator that demonstrates cybersecurity attacks with practical technical training exercises.
